Winecoff Changes American Safety Codes

As a result of the Winecoff disaster, many fire officials became enraged and cried, "Never again"! It was determined that local officials could not be relied upon to make responsible decisions about fire safety, and national safety codes were established and strictly enforced. The response to this tragedy was so intense that officials in several southern cities ordered all existing buildings be retrofitted and brought up to code within seven days or be shut down.

It is a testament to the effectiveness of these newly enforced codes that, in this country, there has never been a hotel fire since in which so many lost their lives.
