The
Winecoff Hotel Fire of 1946
The Winecoff
Hotel in Atlanta, Georgia had been advertised as being "absolutely
fireproof" although it was designed without
sprinklers, fire escapes, or even an alarm system.
On December 7, 1946, one hundred and nineteen people lost
their lives leaping from windows, suffocating from smoke,
and being burned alive.
To
this day it remains the most deadly hotel fire in American
history and the second worst hotel fire in the world. This
catastrophic event forever changed fire safety codes across
the country and continues to break the hearts of all who
know it's tragic story.
